Dogs love playing, and most owners love playing with their dogs.
However, as the owner of a rather energetic dog, what I don’t like is having to constantly buy new dog toys because they get trashed within minutes.
Some breeds are notorious chewers, and are able to destroy even the most rugged toys.
If you, like me, own one of these breeds, you might want to consider looking for specially designed toys.
Just as with any other dog toy, the main thing you need to consider is purpose.
Outdoor toys are usually going to be more resilient anyway, but if you’re looking for a good indoor toy, look for things like no stuffing or reinforced seams.
These are the problem areas on normal toys, and ones that are specially designed for ruthless dogs take these factors into consideration.
You might not know the first place to start looking, so here is a list of my top 10 indestructible dog toys.
1. Goughnuts Original Dog Chew Ring
This is probably one of my all-time favorite dog toys because it can really take a beating without showing any signs of damage.
It was designed by mechanical and polymer engineers, which might sound a bit excessive for a dog toy, but at least it means it’s a good quality product that’s fit for purpose.
The toy is ring-shaped, and so is ideal for playing fetch, and can be thrown like a Frisbee.
It also floats, and so won’t get lost easily, and is great for dogs that love to chew.
What’s more, if your dog manages to chew through the outer layer, the manufacturers will replace it for free!
2. West Paw Zogoflex Interactive Dog Chew
Keeping your dog entertained is the most foolproof way of stopping them chewing.
This toy is a perfect distraction because it actually dispenses treats when tipped the right way.
I love this toy, and it keeps my dog amused for hours, which is a blessing for my furniture.
The toy is made from high-quality polymer, and claims to be completely resistant to chew damage.
While this is a great toy for having around the house, it obviously won’t be great for taking out on walks.
Also, don’t become too reliant on it, or your dog might get a bit fat from all the treats.
3. goDog Dragon with Chew Guard Technology
I always considered plush toys to be a no-go for my dog because they hardly last 5 minutes, and that’s on a good day.
However this one from goDog is made with double-stitched seams and other chew-resistant technology, so your dog can actually get some use out of it.
The toy comes fitted with a squeaker, which will keep your dog amused, and has less stuffing than normal toys, which means less mess to clean up if your dog does destroy it.
I’ve been very happy with the quality of this product, and it’s one of the better plush toys on the market.
4. KONG Flyer
Kong is one of the biggest names in dog toys, and so you know to expect quality from one of their products.
This flying disc is made of rubber, and so flies really well and is very resistant to chew damage. Also, the material helps clean teeth and improve gum health.
While this toy can take some damage, it’s not as resistant as some other outdoor toys on this list.
I found that my dog was able to chew through it after a while, although it definitely lasted longer than a normal rubber toy. Also, it comes in three sizes and so is suitable for pretty much all breeds.
5. Benebone Real Flavor Wishbone
Dogs love chewing, and they love meaty flavors. Luckily, this toy has both covered.
What I love most about this toy is that it’s designed for easy holding, meaning your dog can be kept busy for hours.
Its shape also makes it great for playing games of tug.
Also, I like the fact that it has real flavors infused into the toy, which your dog will love.
The toy is made from incredibly durable plastic that’s non-toxic, and while it’s not ideal for your dog to swallow any, it won’t do much harm if they swallow a piece or two.
This toy doesn’t claim to be indestructible though, so make sure to throw it away before it gets too ruined.
6. Planet Dog Orbee-Tuff Ball
My dog loves playing fetch with balls, but then decides to chew them into a million pieces.
That won’t happen with this ball though.
It’s made from plastic that’s non-toxic and BPA free, but is still very resistant to chewing.
It’s also dishwasher safe, which is a great help if your dog has just spent hours chewing it.
Even though it’s plastic, the ball still bounces, and floats too.
The ball is infused with natural mint oil, so hopefully should give your dog nice smelling breath whenever they chew it.
I was very happy with the quality of this ball, and will never go back to using tennis balls again.
7. Jolly Pets Romp-n-Roll Ball
If you’re looking for a multi-purpose outdoor toy, then this will probably be the one for you.
It’s a ball with a rope attached, meaning you can play fetch and tug.
What’s more, the rope is really strong, and the ball won’t deflate if it’s punctured.
Your dog will inevitably get hours of fun from this toy.
The ball comes in several sizes, so you should be able to find one suitable for most breeds.
It also comes in a range of colors, meaning you can find one that matches your dog’s harness (I went for purple).
Although I prefer the Planet Dog ball above, this one is also a great choice.
8. Nylabone Dental Dinosaur Chew
A big problem that faces many dogs is poor dental hygiene.
It’s only recently that people have started brushing their dog’s teeth, and not every dog likes this (mine included).
So I decided to try dental chews instead, and this one is the best I’ve found so far.
It helps to fight against plaque and tartar, which also stops your dog’s breath from smelling.
Obviously, this chew wouldn’t be on the list if it wasn’t durable.
Considering it’s a chew, it can take quite a lot of damage.
As your dog chews the material separates into fibers that help clean between teeth.
Don’t be concerned by this though, your dog shouldn’t be able to swallow any because they shouldn’t come off the toy.
I love this chew, and I really can’t recommend it enough if you’ve got a serial chewer.
9. West Paw Zogoflex Hurley Dog Toy
Zogoflex is another good brand when it comes to durable dog toys, and I’ve never been disappointed with their products.
This one is a stick specifically designed for throwing, and is also ideal if your dog just loves to chew.
It’s made from a rubberized polymer that’s incredibly tough, and it still bounces and floats.
My dog and I have hours of fun with this toy.
One of the best things about this toy is that it really is very durable.
Your dog will have quite a hard time making any dents in the material, and even if they do they won’t be able to chew pieces off.
My dog has had one for a few months now and I still haven’t seen much damage to it.
I would recommend washing it regularly though; otherwise it can start to smell a bit.
10. Ethical Skinneeez Stuffingless Dog Toy
As mentioned at the beginning of this article, stuffing is one of the banes of any prolific chewer.
I’ve lost track of the amount of times I buy a new toy, turn my back, and immediately find it shredded with stuffing all over the floor.
Considering stuffing serves very little practical purpose, I started shopping around for toys that do away with it completely.
After a while searching and testing, this toy is one of the best I found.
The fabric is durable and can withstand quite a lot of chewing.
Also, the toy has a squeaker and crinkle paper inside, so your dog will still find it interactive.
It’s still durable enough to play tug, and even if your dog does chew through it, there won’t be anything for you to clean up afterwards.
The toy comes in a range of different animals, but my dog particularly likes the squirrel.
When it comes to picking out an indestructible dog toy, make sure you shop around for the most suitable product.
If you do most of your playing outside, stick with rubber or plastic.
Both of these materials are chew-resistant, and can usually be washed.
However, if you’re looking for indoor toys, make sure to check for reinforced seams and a lack of stuffing.
Plush toys are easier to destroy, so you probably want to avoid a massive mess every time.
